HP Touchsmart Laptop/Tablet
The Apple iPad is projected by some to be the “killer app”
for e-readers. It provides a relatively large colour screen and
an easy-to-use touch interface. Colour is always better than
black and white, but unlike the e-ink technology you cannot
easily read the Apple iPad in sunlight or outdoor conditions.
Battery life is estimated at 10 hours (which is better than the
iPhone). Users need to download a free app to read
textbook PDFs. The Apple iPad can also be a
work computer as you can buy inexpensive
apps ($9.99 each) for word processing,
spreadsheets and presentations.
While not officially in the e-reader category, this is a laptop that was given an
e-reader feature through a touch screen and monitor that swivels and can lie
flat for reading. The HP Touchsmart tablet comes with a stylus, webcam,
microphone and Windows 7. The price seems high for an e-reading
device on a student budget. However, this machine has
processing power that the e-readers don’t match. The
tablets also support Flash technology for videos.
Price: $829. Dimensions: 12. 1 inch swivel screen.
Weight: 4.72 lbs. Storage: 4GB of Ram and 500 GB of storage.
To support its new device, the Apple
iBook Canada store was launched in
June 2010 and the company plans to
add titles in addition to free books that
are currently available. There are over
300,000 apps in the Apple APP store.
The higher cost for the 16GB Wi-Fi
model makes the Apple iPad price
comparable to a laptop, and something a student must consider if
buying this one.
DELL Latitude 2110
Price: $549 and up. Dimensions: 9.7 inch
LED backlit diagonal screen. Weight:
1. 5 lbs.
Storage: 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB.
This is a netbook designed with students in mind. It’s a small,
lightweight computer that can be carried in a backpack, with a
rubberized shell to protect against bumps and scratches. As with
all Dell laptops, you can add optional features such as a touch
screen interface and webcam. The screen is a little small for
everyday use, so a larger version may be more appropriate
for the university student reading digital textbooks. The
screen is soft to the touch and doesn’t scroll web pages
as well as the Apple iPad or HP Touchsmart nor does it
have touch magnification. One special feature is a
programmable network light with an open API for
classroom software solutions. Other DELL products
start at $399 after rebates.
Price: $607. Dimensions: 10. 1 x 5.9 inch screen.
Weight: 3 lbs. Storage: 1GB of Ram and 160 GB of storage.
