Somers is working to change that.
Somers, Canada Research Chair in Genes and the
Environment, and his graduate students are
capturing the elusive snakes, fitting them with radio
transmitters and releasing them back into the wild to
monitor their movements. They also take blood
samples and use tools in Somers' lab to examine
patterns in the snakes' genetic diversity.
Somers hopes they will soon have enough research
information that the Committee on the Status of
Endangered Wildlife in Canada will drop their “data
deficient” label on the species.
