Dr. Nick Carleton, one of Canada’s leading young
anxiety and pain researchers, has received the
prestigious New Investigators Salary Award from
the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
About $60 billion is spent annually treating anxiety
and pain disorders in Canada and researchers
estimate that nearly 30 per cent of Canadians will
experience significant anxiety or pain sometime in
With the help of the $300,000 award, Carleton will
expand his research on identifying the underlying
variables associated with different disorders and
ways they can be managed to reduce or prevent
clinically significant anxiety and pain.
This new funding will also allow him to devote more
time to research projects that seek to develop
inexpensive and broadly delivered assessment,
treatment and prevention methods.
