ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Carleton University is seeking nominations and applications for the
University Librarian. We are searching for an established information
professional who is strongly committed to providing visionary and
dynamic leadership for library services and scholarly communication
at Carleton University.
The successful candidate will promote, facilitate, and celebrate
library services and collections supporting teaching, research and
administration and the development of innovative new programs.
Building upon the newly expanded and renovated MacOdrum
Library, Carleton’s new University Librarian will possess a deep
understanding of the new role that libraries play in enriching the
learning environment of students and supporting the research
endeavours of the faculty. Vision, innovation, and energy are key
attributes that we seek in the person who will lead our library over
the coming years.
This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced academic
and administrator to provide leadership in a time of change and
transition, and to build upon Carleton’s traditions of interdisciplinary
collaboration, innovation, and creativity.
Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), the
University Librarian provides strategic and operational leadership
as well as direction and day-to-day administrative management and
oversight of the University Library. Carleton’s Library encompasses
seven departments and serves six Faculties including the Faculty of
Arts and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Public Affairs, the Faculty of
Engineering and Design, the Faculty of Science, the Sprott School of
Business, and the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs. The
breadth and diversity of programs and research expertise, together
with a deep commitment to interdisciplinarity, collaboration and
collegiality, are distinctive features of the University.
The applicant will have a master’s degree or equivalent from an
ALA-accredited Library School and, ideally, a PhD in library and
information science or equivalent and be qualified to be appointed
to a confirmed (tenured) position at the rank of Librarian IV.
Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence
in research and teaching and have a strong record of outstanding
academic and administrative leadership.
The Search Committee, an Advisory Committee to the President,
will begin reviewing applications in December 2014 and will continue
until the appointment is completed. Ideally, the start date for the
new University Librarian will be July 1, 2015.
